From pairing decision to going home: how a litter is planned and raised

A British Bulldog litter here begins months before birth, as a genetic decision recorded against DNA results. This page sets out each stage in order, what happens at that stage, and what documentation is produced.

    Stage by stage

    Six documented stages

    1. 01

      Pairing decision

      Before conception

A litter begins as a documented genetic decision, not an availability date.

      • Both parents hold current DNA panel results and a recorded ADAMTS3 copy number.
      • Pairings that would increase variant copy number in offspring are excluded.
      • Structure, airway function and temperament are reviewed on both parents.

    2. 02

      Pregnancy and delivery

      Weeks 1 to 9

Gestation is managed with veterinary imaging and a planned delivery date.

      • Ultrasound confirmation and radiographic litter count inform the delivery plan.
      • Caesarean delivery is scheduled with a reproductive veterinary team rather than left to chance.
      • Neonatal resuscitation and thermal support protocols are in place before delivery.

      Neonatal period

      Weeks 0 to 3

The highest-risk period is managed with round-the-clock observation.

      • Daily weights are recorded for every puppy and reviewed against expected gain.
      • Thermal regulation, hydration and feeding are monitored continuously.
      • Early neurological stimulation is introduced under a documented protocol.

      Development and enrichment

      Weeks 3 to 8

Puppies are raised inside the household under our Raised with Purpose protocol.

      • Graduated sound, surface and handling exposure across the socialisation window.
      • Household living, crate familiarity and toilet routine introduced early.
      • Individual temperament notes recorded for matching to families.

    5. 05

      Veterinary clearance and records

      Weeks 6 to 8

Each puppy is examined, vaccinated, microchipped and documented before leaving.

      • Independent veterinary health examination with written findings.
      • First vaccination, worming schedule and microchip registration completed.
      • Registry paperwork, parent DNA reports and pedigree supplied to the family.

The testing behind each pairing is set out on the health program page. DNA screening reduces known genetic risk; it does not guarantee a clinically unaffected dog.
